Job Title:   Design Engineer

Reports to:  Engineering Manager


Summary of Job

This position is an engineering track position, responsible for: applying and learning engineering 

design methodologies; use in-house engineering software; performing engineering design for 

components and connections, 3D finite element modeling of components, 3D modeling of structures 

under some guidance of senior staff; performing document preparation in both CAD and BIM 

environments; and, as requested, manage staff to successfully perform assigned tasks.


Qualifications

▪ Bachelors in Architectural, Civil, or Structural Engineering, Masters preferred or equivalent 

work- and industry- related experience (as allowed under licensure by the state of Illinois).

▪ Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), licensed Structural Engineer (SE) preferred, in state of 

Illinois plus 3+ years of diverse project experience in the design of buildings

▪ Experience in precast prestressed concrete design a plus

✓ snow, seismic and wind analysis and design

✓ structural integrity requirements

✓ current building and material codes

✓ commercially-available office software (Word, Excel, Adobe/Bluebeam, etc.)

✓ CAD and BIM software such as AutoCAD, Revit and Tekla or equivalent

✓ engineering software such as RAM suite of programs, Risa, TEDDS, LEC Wall, etc. or 

equivalent;

▪ Demonstrated willingness to learn new engineering principles and stay abreast of code changes 

outside the office environment

▪ Able to work extended periods (multiple hours) of the day at a computer

▪ Able to visit job site and function in rough outdoor environment (cold, heat, humidity and 

inclement weather)

▪ Able to function for extended periods in a manufacturing plant exposed to cold, heat, humidity, 

and dust

▪ Possess a basic understanding of precast plant issues including casting and bed 

rules

▪ Possess a basic understanding of precast erection issues and temporary bracing 

requirements

▪ Possess a basic understanding of bed and plant scheduling

Responsibilities

▪ Prepare ALL work in accordance with approved office processes, formats and standards

▪ Define design and documentation tasks required to design a simple building and its components, 

under direction of senior engineering staff

▪ Work on assigned tasks and projects, under direction of senior engineering staff, performing 

engineering analyses and calculations

▪ Work on assigned tasks and projects, under direction of senior engineering staff, preparing 

required documents in CAD and BIM format

▪ Perform 3D finite element analysis and design under direction of senior engineering 

staff

▪ Perform tasks accurately and on time with necessary guidance, and proactively seek advice on 

tasks as needed

▪ Meet task and project deadlines and adhere to budgeted hours

▪ Volunteers to work hours need to meet deadlines

▪ Volunteers to work additional hours to assist other (not assigned work) to meet 

deadlines

▪ When asked, works hours needed to meet deadlines

▪ When asked, works additional hours to assist others (not assigned work) to meet 

deadlines

▪ Manager other staff members, as required, when assigned as a Task Leader

▪ Participate in activities within and outside the office that increase personal engineering 

capabilities

▪ Participate in external/in-house seminars and training activities/sessions

▪ Participate in the development of in-house design templates, checklist and standards

▪ Coach and mentor junior staff, as appropriate and as required

▪ Perform other duties as assigned
